Just a little note

Happy Lunar New Year! We had peking duck for our family reunion dinner and it’s all I can think about right now. I haven’t found a really good peking duck in Auckland yet, so if you have any good recommendations, send them this way!

This is what I have found this week:

What I’ve been listening to

More episodes of Creative Pep Talk with Andy J PIZ-ZAH! Like this Q&A about getting stuff done and impostor syndrome.

A little thing called Illustrated Tapes, an on-going mixtape series. You can also find them as playlists in Spotify. I’m particularly loving Illustrated Tapes 014: Nautical Dusk and 021: To: You, Love: Me.

What I’ve been reading

Learning about habits and The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. I’m a Questioner! Find out what type you are.

The shocking ignorance that boys and young men still have around rape and consent, eloquently written by Laurie Halse Anderson. Made me think about how we can have frank, open discussions with boys about sexuality, consent and the effects of rape.

Is farting in relationships an intimacy builder or a mystery killer? This guy asked his girlfriend to specifically let loose in front of him for the benefit of their relationship.

Did you know about actress Lucy Liu’s art practice? Neither did I. It’s great!

This weekly column by novelist Elena Ferrante where she talks about ‘love, life, the female experience and everything in between’ is poetical and moving.

What I’ve been watching

I can’t get over the ridiculousness and sheer ineptitude that is/was the Fyre Festival. The Netflix doco is very entertaining and maddening at the same time.

Definitely don’t watch this episode of Hot Ones featuring Gordon Ramsey if you don’t like foul language. Because it is filthy. Hot Ones is a great show though, where they feed increasingly spicy chicken wings to celebrities, chefs and entertainers, all while interviewing them. Genuinely great interviewing skills on the part of the show’s host and some great guests, including Terry Crews and Tyra Banks.

Binging with Babish is always pretty fun. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see someone try to recreate the grey stuff from Beauty and the Beast?

Until next time!
